Dark Tranquility: Endtime Signals

Entime Signals is the 13th studio album from Gothenburg melodic death metal legends Dark Tranquility, and despite a major line-up change with longtime bassist Anders Iwers & drummer Anders Jivarp both leaving the band, they have not lost a step one bit. Stepping into Dark Tranquility comes new members Christian Jansson on bass and drummer Joakim Strandberg Nillson, who join vocalist Mikael Stanne, guitarist Johan Reinholdz, and keyboard player Martin Brandstrom to form the new version of the band. With all lyrics written by Stanne and music created by Reinholdz & Brandstrom, it's no surprise that Entime Signals sounds like, well, just another top-notch Dark Tranquility album.

One thing to note is that while Stanne has utilized his more melodic and gothic-styled vocals plenty in the past, he's using them more often on this album, and for some who like the variety of having growls and melodic vocals working side by side, that will be a good thing. "Shivers and Voids" kicks things off in ferocious melodic death metal fashion, Stanne's lethal growls forging through a haze of ethereal keys, wild lead guitar, and chugging riffs, and it's quite the catchy yet heavy track. "Unforgivable" is equally as pummeling, but on "Not Nothing", "One of Us Is Gone", and "Wayward Eyes", it's the clean vocals of Stanne that really stands out...this guy has become such a fantastic singer overall, that you have to wonder if he will one day decide to leave the growls behind and embrace his melodic side. He's that damn good. But, hit bread and butter has always been his clearly enunciated growls, and he's in top form on sledgehammer tracks like "Drowned Out Voices", "A Bleaker Sun", and the crushing "Our Disconnect". Musically, it's all top-shelf stuff here, with the new guys killing it on the tight rhythms and plenty of room for stellar guitar riffs, solos, and airy keyboards, which enhance every song.

In summary, another year goes by, and another highly enjoyable album from the always dependable Dark Tranquility.
