Here’s an unlikely concept album: Each of the eight songs clocks in at three minutes and 33 seconds. Hence, the record’s intriguing title. On 3’33 Treasure Hunt, French jazz-rock guitarist Jean-Pierre Llabador wrote six classy instrumentals and two soulful pop-centric songs with female vocals.
But then comes another twist: Llabador doesn’t perform any of them. As the bio sheet accompanying the record explains: Surviving a car crash and life-threatening health events in recent years … have robbed him of his ability to physically play guitars on his own album.” So Llabador -- a legend in his homeland who, along with his brother Jean-Claude, founded the French jazz-rock band Coincidence -- enlisted a stealthy group of musical friends to “execute and define” his music. Llabador produced everything, too, and it sounds crisp and fresh.
The result is a sparkling record of melodic, memorable, diverse and tasty jazz- and fusion-tinged rock songs, expertly performed. They don’t wear out their welcome, either. Indeed, the whole thing is over in about 29 minutes -- which might just give you enough time to play the album again.
