Haavisto, Jukka: Live at Eclipse Jazz Club
Following up his 2022 album Reflections, bassist Jukka Haavisto is back with a hot 4 song live set Live at the Eclipse Jazz Club. This has everything you could ask for, the energy of a live performance, great interplay among the musicians, and great tunes to support the soloists. Each musician makes their mark; keyboardist Vili Itapelto delivers an amazing performance with that electric piano on the opener “Opus nr 11” as Haavisto and the band lock in and groove together. “Opus nr 8” has a strange synth leads to open, but once the terrific guitar work of Johannes Granroth kicks in, the band ups their game. Check out Haavisto’s incredible bass playing that’s locked in with drummer Severi Sorjonen who has a solo spotlight. “Morning Dew” is the most subtle piece featuring some nice soloing, but they save the best for last with “Dancing in the Woods”, this guitar/keyboard extravaganza is guaranteed to knock your socks off with its smoking ending.

Haavisto, Jukka: Live at Eclipse Jazz Club Posted by Pete Pardo, SoT Staff Writer on 2025-03-26 19:41:03 My Score:
This is an absolutely thrilling live set from Finnish bassist Jukka Haavisto and his band, recorded live in February of 2024 at the Eclipse Jazz Club in Finland. In addition to Haavisto's incredible bass skills and songwriting chops, you also have the immense talents of guitarist Johannes Granroth, a guy who can lay down a tasty melodic line as well as shred with the best of them. Toss in the ace drumming of Severi Sorjonen and the textures from keyboard player Vili Itäpelto, and you have one red-hot line-up. There are no weak spots here, from the opening grooves of "Opus nr. 11" (man, that guitar solo!) all the way through to
"Dancing in the Woods", there are plenty of exciting fusion moments to be had. The leader's Jaco-influenced moments on "Morning Dew" are gorgeous, but the high-energy closer is really where it's at here, with grooves galore, jazzy electric piano, and fiery guitar solos, this one cooks from start to finish, and with only four lengthy tracks, the guys have plenty of room to stretch out. Recommended!
