The opening riffs on "Call of Honor," the powerful opening statement Kinrick makes on its debut CD, Sense Your Darkness, will grab you by the throat and not let go until the final chunky drumbeats of the title track 10 songs later. This American/Norwegian band - which takes its name from its two leaders, Vainglory guitarist Corbin King and ex-Firewind vocalist Stephen Fredrick (Kin-Rick, get it?) - plays traditional, in-your-face heavy metal punctuated by King's crisp fretwork and Fredrick's gravelly vocals. Drummer Stian Kristoffersen (Firewind, Pagan's Mind) and bassist James Martin (Zanister) round out the quartet. Although not officially part of the band, renowned producer/musician David T. Chastain produced, mixed and mastered Sense Your Darkness, as well as wrote all the songs, and his fingerprints are all over this record - from the raw delivery to the thick mix. Tracks like "I Fight Alone" and "Make Me A Man" boast an old-school vibe tweaked just enough to make them sound fresh. There's nothing frilly about this record - Ballads? Who needs ballads? - which is lyrically laced with aggression, anger and attitude. Man, oh man, does this thing kick ass!
