As if they have just stepped out of a time capsule, Brooklyn's Biohazard, one of the true innovators of the New York hardcore scene, have delivered a truly enjoyable feast with Means to An End, an album brimming with catchy brutality as if it was 1990 all over again. These guys practically created this sound, melding punk attitude with heavy metal ferocity, and if you are a fan at all of heavy music in general it's hard not to get into the groove and chunk of these ten lethal songs. On each tune, you can picture the mosh pit creating havok, yet there is a certain rhythmic groove going on as well which helps keep everything accessible. The vocals of bassist Evan Seinfeld and guitarist Billy Graziadei are very aggressive, but you can understand everything they are shouting, unlike many other bands who play in a similar sound. The guitar riffs, well they are perfectly executed, meaty, with plenty of stop/starts and heavy dirges, perfect for the pit in a live setting. You even get the occasional guitar solo for good measure. One listen to "Killing to Be Free", and your body already starts to fall into a crouch, fists cocked, ready for the onslaught. Sure, it's mindless, but so what. Any progger or sophisticated metal fan who may turn their nose at stuff like this, give it a try. This is made to be played loud, not taken too seriously, and shared with friends, preferably at your next keg or toga party.
