Whew, the cover of this one offers up a hint of what is to come. The sepia colored Marshall stack sitting in the forest clearing promises a heavy raunchy release and Alvin delivers!! This is an hour of swamp-drenched southern raunch at its finest. Alvin heavies up his overall sound considerably on this one while retaining all of his southern rootsy charm in contrast to his earlier more restrained releases. Great songwriting, smoky heart felt vocals and Alvin's staggering guitar bursts permeate this beast. Audley Freed (x Cry of Love/Black Crowes) guests and adds a few of his own wicked solos to the mix. The party starts right away with Big Mama's Door (Might Return) and continues through the last strains of Shootout on I-55, the bonus track. Alvin is well steeped in the traditional blues artists but also in the riffing of his classic rock era idols, Hendrix, Marino, Trower, Kossoff, Winter, Hazel, Moore et al, but rather than copying them, he uses nuances from their styles throughout his work. An excellent album.
