Former Ambrosia vocalist/guitarist shows he's still in fine form on The Secret of Movin' On, an enjoyable pop/jazz outing that sees the singer teaming up with an all-star cast of vocalists and musicians. While nothing here will compare to the early progressive prog/pomp of his former band, fans of contemporary AOR and jazz will love the tuneful grooves and tasty melodies that permeate this CD. Highlights, well, there are a few, like the emotional duet with former Journey frontman Steve Perry on "A Brand New Start", the slick title track with Heart's Ann Wilson, the lush yet bluesy "Tell Her Goodbye" featuring America's Dewey Bunnell, and the funky pop of "Where We Started From", that also sees some vocal help from Eagles/Poco bassist Timothy B. Schmidt. In addition, Pack recreates two Ambrosia classics, "Biggest Part of Me" and "You're the Only Woman", which sound so fresh and melodic that you will sing them just like it was 1982 all over again. Pack's smooth vocals and tasteful yet restrained guitar work are a joy to hear, and although it would have been nice to hear him dig into some more rock oriented material, it's great to have him back recording nontheless. Now if only his former bandmates can get into the studio again we can see who is the most capable of carrying the torch.
