It's not every day you get to hear a heavy metal band from Greece. Inactive Messiah play what is labled as a "electro-NU-death metal", whatever that might be. Their self-titled debut employs huge guitar riffs, often times very groovy riffs, on ten tracks of solid if unspectacular metal that has lots in common with modern nu-metal. You know the characteristics-angst ridden guttural vocals, crashing drums, plenty of repetitve guitar chords, and some atmospheric keyboards for good measure. While there are some catchy grooves and headbanging fury to be found on a few tracks, especially "Mind Trap", the Black Label Society influenced "Hate in Me", and the melodic "Blossom of Paranoia", complete with some nifty guitar fills & harmonies, much of what you hear on the CD lacks anything to make it overly memorable. It's not that Inactive Messiah don't try, hell, they have the chops, and they have the aggression. What they need to work on their next time around is writing some memorable tunes that will warrant repeated listens. This debut has some material that is fine for an occasional spin, but not enough for the long term.
