I have no idea where the members of Ohio’s Quarkspace get the ideas for titles to their improvised space-rock instrumentals, but when the music sounds this funky and refreshing, I don’t care that the songs on Spacefolds 6 – one in a long line of free-form albums from the group – are called “Sheep Farm” and “Funkpalast at Brian’s Wormhole.” Originally formed under the name Quark! in 1984 as a Zappa and Camel covers band, Quarkspace eventually changed its name to avoid any potential lawsuits from a certain software company. Along with the name change came a musical shift toward more ambient sounds.
Spacefolds 6 contains eight tracks ranging in length from 4:14 to 13:23, and it's rife with all sorts of atmospheric imagery that’s bound to give space rock fans wet dreams. Synthesizers galore collide with bass and drums to create aural psychedelic trips that are distinct enough to keep the album from getting boring over the course of 72 minutes. And the song’s titles – including “Bonzo’s G.S.B.,” “D.O.B.H. #1” and “D.O.B.H. #2,” in addition to the two aforementioned ones – practically beg listeners to listen harder and longer to these hallucinogenic soundscapes for clues that may decipher their meanings.
