Hola, mis amigos! Okay, that's about as much of my high school Spanish as I can summon for you today (pretty lame, huh?) And the press release for this puppy is written in French, since it's a French label. In fact, you people out there in Sea of Tranquility land should consider yourselves lucky to have a multilingual reviewer on staff, however inadequate! Just because I practically majored in French in college doesn't mean I can actually translate a French press release. But here goes nothing.
I think Ficcion: Sobre El Abismo means something like, the band's name being Fiction (which may or may not tribute the great magical realist writer Jorge Luis Borges), the album's title is "Concerning the Abyss," or possibly "On the Abysmal." Even so, the music is surging, upbeat, happy, tranquil, lanquid, party music suitable for most outdoor occasions. Sun-baked Yes, salsa-flavored ELP, Goblin without the horror: Ficcion is an excellent band, combining snappy Farfisa organ riffs, horns, synth bass and other stuff. It's mostly keyboard driven, and should definitely appeal to most fans of progressive rock. It helps if you know some Spanish, but even if you don't, the music really delivers. I say buy, buy!
