Dogpound: A Night In The Gutter

This is the second outing for the melodic Swedish quartet and the logical follow up to 2003's The Hellburn. Not a lot of change in style from the first but this new effort boasts a higher production quality and improved overall band sound.

The characterizing features of this band are the melodic vocals of Henrik "Hea" Andersson and the crunchy guitar sound of Mikael "Mick" Dahlqvist. The vocal harmonies in particular display a particular quality of writing and performance. Kinda like early Kings X, particularly on the track "Sail On" The overall sound can best be described as modern melodic rock with a bit of an edge in the guitar sounds. This album will appeal to those who enjoy typical European melodic rock but will leave those who are searching for something unique empty handed.

Dogpound: A Night In The Gutter

My Score:

Dogpound, the Swedish metal band, are 20 years too late. In 1986, they would have made a fortune alongside bands like Honeymoon Suite, Cinderalla, and Bon Jovi. A Night In The Gutter is really not metal, hair-band, or AOR, but simply a combination of the best parts of most of those. Unfortunately, there really isn't a market right now for that middle of the road band.

"5 Seconds Away" is very probably the most radio friendly song on the CD, but none of the songs really experiment too far from the Verse/Chorus/Bridge formula. Micke Dahlqvist plays a standard metal lead and rhythm that fills in nicely around Henrik Andersson's vocals, which show good range and is the main factor in what makes many of the songs unique.

A Night In The Gutter is not going to open any new windows into song composition, but if you wish bands like Zebra or The Outfield had recorded a few more albums, here is a CD that will fit right in with your collection. It will take the right audience, but anyone that rocked to this style of music in the late 80s will feel right at home here. Dogpound's second release on Lion Music is recommended for their overall tribute to that era.
