Sheavy: Republic?

Listening to Canadian band Sheavy's latest and their third CD overall, Republic?, the first question I had to ask myself was, were these guys living under a rock for the past thirty years, because the sounds conjured up on this slab of stoner rock has 1975 written all over it in a huge way. As I was totally becoming immersed in their wall of sound I actually had to check the cover a few times to make sure I wasn't listening to the Black Sabbath Sabotage CD. Not only are the riffs on this disc eerily reminiscent of the trademark sounds of Iommi and co. but I'll be damned if Sheavy vocalist Steve Hennessey doesn't sound like Ozzy in a lot of places. If you don't believe me, check out the middle section of the epic 7 minute track "Hangman" and then come and tell me these guys haven't toked repeatedly to Sabbath's back catalogue.

Republic? delivers 50 minutes of pure sonic sludge and for a band that has been around in one form or another for over 10 years, they certainly have their chops down and it shows they've done their homework well. It's certainly no surprise then to discover that they are signed to Rise Above Records in the U.K., a label which is owned by one of the more recent masters of gloom and doom, Lee Dorian from Cathedral. Let's be totally honest, there is nothing remotely new or original about the riffs or the style of music on Republic? but who cares? This CD is just so damn cool to listen to and Sheavy deserve to have their jams kicked out big time. If you're looking for a great record for that little retro 70's party you've been planning, then keep this CD on repeat and the music on Republic? should be more than enough of an excuse to keep that bong gurgling long into the night. Also if I take to smoking the green again, then you'll know exactly who to blame.
