Sourvein: Emerald Vulture

Now this is what doom metal is all about. Hailing from New Orleans, this four piece called Sourvein churn out some truly monstrous noise here on the EP Emerald Vulture. The guitars are thick and sludge ridden, the bass fat and throbbing, the drums pounding, and the beer soaked vocals angry and aggressive. There's only four tunes here, but they are all sweaty examples of power chord heaven dripping with feedback and distortion. This is the first in a series of three EP's that the band have signed on for with Devil Doll Records, and despite the recent Hurricane Katrina that rampaged it's way through New Orleans and other parts of the South, Sourvein managed to finish this first installment. There's not a dull moment to be heard here, and while the sound quality is pretty harsh and almost that of a live bootleg (that seems to be a trademark of many doom recordings these days) there is a certain primitive charm to it. Tunes like "Witch Rides Out" and "Blessed" blast along like a runaway elephant, and instantly bring to mind bands like Saint Vitus and the early days of Corrosion of Conformity. Lead singer T-Toy has a rough and gravelly voice, sounding almost like Motorhead mainman Lemmy, and the guitar and bass work of both Will & Dan contain the enough distortion and fuzz to pound your brain senseless.

New Orleans will indeed rise again!
