On Avarice & Absolution, the debut CD from Revery, a heavy five-piece band out of Virginia that has shared the stage with Rob Zombie, Shinedown and Fuel, the band "had the opportunity to add keyboards and other bullshit like that" — in the words of guitarist Mike Doyle — "but we would rather play straight-ahead rock."
Just like every other young, aggressive-sounding rock band on the radio these days.
With the exception of Avarice & Absolution's first single (the rousing "Popstar Wedding") and a couple of other tracks, Revery offers little to distinguish itself from the herd of bands that formed and faded during the past decade in the wake of trendsetters like Stone Temple Pilots. Gritty vocals, down-tuned arrangements, overreaching lyrics and flimsy packaging combine to result in a record that could have sounded quite different. These seasoned musicians from Virginia's local scene can definitely play; they just need something to separate themselves from the pack. Maybe keyboards or some other bullshit might have helped.
