This is an interesting EP from technical death/avant-garde metal band Biolich. The Space Between Home and Today contains six tracks which run the gamut from insane and complex death metal workouts, spacey prog-rock, and melodic modern metal. Perhaps the band tries to throw too many styles at the listener, which for some might be a problem, but my guess is that the band will focus and continue to grow into a more cohesive style over time. Meanwhile, this EP shows heaps of promise. The opening brutality of "Morals Like Frozen Piss" features plenty of intense riffing and low gutteral death metal vocals, and even some tender acoustic interludes laced with melodic clean vocals. Fans of Demilich or Between the Buried and Me will love the stop/start frenzy on "Extensive Autumn Necrony", and I detect some black metal references, especially with the screeching vocals and manic drum work, on the furious "Twin Faced Exorcism". The band gets more experimental on the avant-garde/progressive "Ikon Sumo", a lengthy instrumental complete with some tribal drum patters & loops, droning guitar soundscapes, and chilling keyboard effects. The last track "Unfortunately...", despite it's funny title, is more like a manic and brief grindcore number, and sounds a bit out of place here.
Biolich definitely shows some promise, and I'd be interested to hear a full-length album by them. They seem to be pretty good at delivering solid technical and avant-garde death metal, and if I were them I'd work on that style and take it to the next level.
