Sepultura: Live in Sao Paulo (DVD)
This companion DVD set to the also released 2 CD Live in Sao Paulo is a pummeling yet necessary purchase for the Sepultura fan. Jam packed with a full live show and plenty of extras, this is proof positive of the legendary status and extreme nature of these Brazilian heavyweights. The band itself was on fire that night, playing many of their classic material as some newer tunes that they have recorded since new American singer Derek Green joined up with them. Plus, they were joined by many guest singers, making the whole show seem like a real event on their home turf.
There are a few negatives. For one, much of the picture is fairly dark throughout the set, which can be a little annoying at times. Also, new vocalist Green, and many of the guest singers, are pretty harsh, so if you are not a fan of this style of music, or are new to Sepultura, this might not be the best place to start to get into the band. Give some of their earlier CD's a listen first, then be sure to check this out. Long time fans though will be in their glory, as overall the band gives a very powerful and spirited performance, and the set list is heavy and unrelenting.

Sepultura: Live in Sao Paulo (DVD) Posted by Ken Pierce, SoT Staff Writer on 2006-03-12 07:06:19 My Score:
Released at the same time as the CD bearing the same name comes the live concert DVD from Sepultura. The Metal legends seem to pull out all of the stops to give you the best possible DVD concert that they can. As everyone knows the band no longer features Max Cavalera and instead showcases the talents of American singer Derrick Green. His different vocal register gives a little bit of difference to the older material and brings new life to the direction the band is following with him at the helm. The CD of this concert is more for the diehard purist who will enjoy it no matter what while the DVD will have a larger level of appeal. I admit I went into the release with only a fair amount of knowledge of Sepultura music for while I was hard core into the Metal they were just never a band I followed. The concert DVD comes in two parts with the first being the full show that is on the CD and a couple of bonus clips to close it out. The performance is enhanced for the crazed Brazilian audience by bringing out special guests during the show including Jairo Guedz, Alex Kolesne, Zé Gonzáles, B- Negao, & Joăo Gordo. Given these guests included a former member of the band and someone from Krisiun you can imagine that they went over very well in the eyes of the crowd. I felt that Sepultura did a good job on this piece even though a lot of shots are on the dark side. This is the fault of the stage lighting used and not the band themselves. The vocals are mostly hard core in nature and growls the main focus through the songs that cover every album that the band has released.
Bonus Features: DVD2 is loaded with features to enjoy. Here is the run down: 1. Documentary 2. Mind War (video), 3. Bullet the blue Sky (video), 4. Choke (video), 5. Nomad (live), 6. Desperate City (live), 7. Territory (live), 8. Slideshow, 9. Credits. The videos were fine and the documentary gives a nice view of some of Brazil which is very nice to see. Derrick cites how he came to be part of the band, but it was a little hard to understand him at times. Best play this segment loud.
The DVD is a little easier to enjoy for the casual fan as it's a solid performance musically and the appearance of the guests make it a lot more fun. Diehards will find this a worthy addition to their Sepultura collection. Fans that hold on for Max's return need to get over it and get used to Derrick Green as its his turn to bring in the future with this legendary band.
