Added to Yes's collection of DVD's is another DVD, simply entitled Greatest Video Hits. It consists mainly of MTV-type videos, which is no surprise considering that most of the material on the DVD come from the albums Drama, 90125, and Big Generator. As most Yes fans know, these 3 albums were released in the years 1980-1987, right around the time MTV was born and would go on to change the music industry.
Clearly, the songs that are contained on this disk that may have been found on MTV years ago include "Leave It", "It Can Happen", "Owner of a Lonely Heart", "Rhythm of Love", & "Love Will Find a Way", although the latter song consists mainly of musical performance footage, much to the delight of the serious Yes fan. Some Yes fans may not be too fond of the videos particularly from 90125, the album with which Yes probably enjoyed their most commercial success. For those fans that don't mind, this is merely another Yes collectible with a trip down memory lane.
If you are looking for the videos with a better example of Yes's instrumental virtuosic tendencies, songs like "Wondrous Stories", "Madrigal" and "Tempus Fugit" are very good examples, although it appears that the studio versions of the songs were sync-ed with the performance footage. As for live concert footage, the only songs that fit the bill on this DVD are "Hold On" and "I've Seen All Good People" (both filmed during the 90125 tour).
Clearly, the songs chosen for this DVD are among Yes's best, although if you are looking for an anthology of Yes's entire illustrious career, or are looking for concert footage, this DVD may not be for you. Remember, these videos were taken mostly when it was fashionable for rock groups to make videos, so this is mainly a snapshot of Yes in the early 80's. This may be a good DVD for the Yes fan who already owns DVD's with concert footage/anthology type stuff. Judging this DVD on its own merits, it is always a pleasure to see and hear one of the premier progressive rock groups of all time play some of their greatest hits, which they showcase quite well on this DVD, complete with commentary by the band in between songs.
