The "Voice of Rock" is back once again with a powerful collection of tunes that bridge the gap between hard rock, metal, soul, and funk. As always, his voice is extremely strong and soulful, and his bass playing solid. Add a top-notch band, some strong songs, and a few covers and you have another winner for the former Deep Purple and Black Sabbath member.
Some of the CD's best songs are the ones that are in more of a hard rock/metal style, as on the chunky opener "Can't Stop the Flood", the relentless "When You Fall", and the ballsy "Inside." Guitarist JJ Marsh is quite the fluid player, as he proves on the heavy funk of "Out On Me." Guitarist Pat Travers joins the rest of the band for a rousing rendition of the Rare Earth classic "I Just Want to Celebrate", and does a great job sharing the vocal duties with Hughes on that track as well. As on past releases, Hughes digs into his Deep Purple bag, this time for a remake of the Purple classic "Highball Shooter", and the band really does it justice.
While most of the CD"s first half is very strong, the last few tracks, while decent, are kind of a letdown, and fall into the mellow ballad category. In retrospect, the variety included on this CD is a testament to the singers talents and ability to cover many styles, but when you start off on such a rocking beginning, having three of the last four tunes creating a whimper might not have been the way to go. Overall , there are quite a few classic Glenn Hughes rockers here to please all his many fans, including this one.
