Despite the bleakness of the band name, album and cover art, the second CD from Finland's Misery Inc. makes brilliant use of dual lead vocalists and lead guitarists while offering a refreshing take on modern metal.
Fortunately the band ditched its original premise, which was to make music without any lead guitars, and forged ahead with a sound rooted in melodic death metal and soaring progressive metal — much like Mercenary. The best tracks on Random End ("Further/Deeper," "Cyanide," " … Out of Here Alive") don't go overboard with the grunts, instead focusing on the band's smart arrangements and creating an accessible but technical style. Keyboard flourishes aren't as prevalent as they are in Mercenary's music, but Misery Inc. also doesn't employ a full-time keyboard player. Instead, the guitar tones of Janne Tolonen and Teemu Ylämäki take the place of keys on songs like "Yesterday's Grave" and "Source of Fatal Addiction." Heavy riffs, melodic hooks and an overpowering sense of professionalism complete the package, making Random End a good place to begin for well-educated metalheads looking for new bands to follow in 2006.
