Space Nelson: Don't Panic

Given a name like Space Nelson, one may think they would be in for Ozric Tentacles style space rock and one would be entirely wrong! According to the liner notes, the band has been influenced by the likes of Rush and Yes, none of which is too apparent while listening to Don't Panic. What we have is fairly straightforward power pop, closer in style to the Foo Fighters than to Geddy Lee and Company. The band occasionally showcases subtle shades of complexity during the brief instrumental passages, reminding me a little of Enchant. But unlike Enchant, the focus is clearly on brevity, as the songs average four minutes and the length of the CD is only 32 minutes (just like Kiss!). None of which is at all a bad thing; in fact, the songs are catchy, fun and clever. Guitarist John Piasentin has a voice that reminds me more of Dave Grohl than Jon Anderson and his guitar playing is more akin to 90s alternative rock than 70s progressive music. While hardcore prog rockers will probably want to look elsewhere, I encourage anyone who enjoys modern rock to give Space Nelson a try.
