Paingod: Paingod

The first major label release from the band formerly known as Raped Ape, Paingod's eponymous CD has a lot of ambition and good intentions. Unfortunately, it lives up to few of them.

Despite tight instrumentation and aggressive songwriting, the band never develops a sound of their own; indeed, they sound like they may have once been a Biohazard cover band, and have never found their own voice. The multiple-vocalist, metal-funk, slam-dance formula has been perfected before, and, sadly, it's been done better elsewhere, as well.

The only real keeper on this disc is "One and the Same," an unusual piece of anger with its Kyuss-like bottom end and chord phrasings that bring to mind Piggy of Voivod. It also just so happens to be the shortest track on the album.

The album ends with the very fast, quite fun "Motivate," an entertaining if unoriginal song. In fact, "unoriginal" is what stays in my mind all through this disc - there's just nothing here that we haven't heard before. The boys in Paingod are obviously talented musicians - here's hoping that their songwriting develops a voice of its own in time for their next release.
