Psyco Drama: The Illusion
Wielding a progmetal sound that is light on the keyboards and heavy on the
syncopated beats, Psyco Drama pour out an hour of fascinating, compelling music
on The Illusion.
Vocalist Corey Brown has a simply gorgeous voice that recalls early Triumph, and
it glides smoothly over the complex melodies he traces. In the background, the
guitar lines are complicated and involving: funky pulse-beats that remind me of
Shadow Gallery at times, they frequently go in unexpected directions, as in the
ending of "Flames."
I'm particularly fond of "Eyes of a Child," one of the catchiest progmetal songs
in a long time, which has a chorus that just won't leave your head, as well as
some beautifully surreal lyrics. Also notable is "World Gone Mad," a funky,
driving tune with great vocal melodies.
Fans of old-school metal like Queensryche, and fans of smart rock in general,
will find a lot to love on this album.
