A Triggering Myth: The Remedy of Abstraction

One of the most consistant progressive rock groups of the last decade, A Triggering Myth, return with their sixth release titled The Remedy of Abstraction. The duo of Rick Eddy and Tim Drumheller have once again joined forces with acclaimed guitarist Scott McGill, and he brings along drummer Vic Stevens and bassist Michael Manring from McGill Manring Stevens. In addition, to add even more variance into the mix, Eddy and Drumheller invited KBB violinist Akihisa Tsuboy to guest and add a few smoking solos. The end result on The Remedy of Abstraction is a very progressive and jazzy instrumental affair, littered with haunting melodies and fiery interplay between the players.

The duo of Eddy and Drumheller add plenty of sumptuous, spacey, and jazz-fusion styled keyboard textures to each and every song here, plus various solo spots on piano and synths. Having players like McGill, Manring, and Tsuboy around bring endless possibilities for solo spots as well. Listen to the gentle and majestic piano play off against McGill's gorgeous acoustic guitar on "Her Softening Sorrow", or Manring's yearning solo bass lines on the fusiony title track-just great stuff. Shades of the Canterbuy scene are all over the blistering "Not Even Wrong", with intricate rhythms from Manring and Stevens, whispy violin from Tsuboy, and jagged electric guitar lines from McGill. The guitarists dizzying leads on "Shakespeare's Strippers" recall Allan Holdsworth's time with UK, and "When Emily Dickinson Learned to Lunge" is a great lighthearted slice of Canterbury fusion ala National Health or Hatfield & the North, or even Happy the Man.

If instrumental prog is your thing, and you have a penchant for sophisticated melodies performed with fire and class, then The Remedy of Abstraction will be glad to find a home in your CD collection. A fine, fine release!
