The power metal band Iron Fire, natives of Denmark and recorded on Napalm Records, come back with their 3rd studio release in the form of the CD Revenge. For anyone who has never heard of Iron Fire before today, they can best be compared to the power metal style of Manowar, Hammerfall, and Edguy. As can be seen on their cover art, and from what can be gathered from some of their song titles, they are very much in keeping with the medieval sword and sorcery themed brand of power metal, taking a page out of Hammerfall's book. Upon first listen, they can also be compared to earlier Iced Earth material from the Matt Barlow era.
Consisting of band members Martin Steele on vocals, Kirk Backarach and J.J. on the twin axe attack, Martin Lund on bass guitar, Jens B. on drums, overall Iron Fire's Revenge is a solid metal album. Every member of the band does a very good job instrumentally, between Martin Steele's soaring and powerful vocals, J.J. and Kirk's crunching rhythm and shredding leads, to Martin Lund's powerful bass lines, and Jens B.'s great drum work, the talent is all here on full display. The production also appears to be first rate.
While the quality of the metal on this CD is very consistent throughout, and while there really aren't any weak spots on the CD, at times Revenge can be a bit too repetitive. There are times when I have difficulty telling one song from another. And remembering the old adage that when one is listening to a lot of different CD offerings in a week's time, one would usually look for something that would make a band stand out from all the rest. I have to say that in that respect, Revenge was a bit of an enigma, good metal from a talented band, but nothing to suggest that any new ground is being broken here. I would suggest that for their next release, Iron Fire try to break it up a bit, and experiment with some different song formats, like maybe a few longer, more progressive style songs. However, with their natural talents, I have faith that they will get better with each release. Give it a shot.
