Puppetina: Piewacket

Puppetina is Anna Homler (vocals, toys, objects), Stephanie Payne (keyboards, mbira, samples, loops, vocals), and Ethan Holtzman on accordion, whose new album Piewacket (named after Kim Novak's cat in the film Bell, Book and Candle) is a very odd mix of atmospheric and ethereal vocals with sparse and home made instrumentation. In fact, I'm hard pressed to call any of these 14 pieces songs, as for the most part they are just either examples of Homler crooning (and she has a lovely voice) and humming in some language that she apparently created, or quirky instrumental numbers featuring accordion, clunky keyboard sounds, or the odd bell or kitchen sink noise. In the end, although I wanted to like what these two ladies put together here, I was bored to death, and left wondering exactly who their target audience might be. Give the duo credit for at least sticking to their guns and trying something really different and unique, but ultimately I think they will need to be a little more focused next time around and come up with something a little more memorable.
