The second album from fusion legends Secret Oyster, Sea Son, (lovingly reissued by The Lasers Edge) is a fiery romp through progressive and jazz rock styles. Originally released on CBS in 1974, this reissue also features three never before released bonus tracks, great sound quality, and new liner notes from sax player Karsten Vogel, who many of you will know from the work he has done recently with Taylor's Free Universe.
There's no two ways about it-this is smoking fusion of the highest caliber. Fans of classic Return to Forever, The Mahavishnu Orchestra, Tony Williams Lifetime, Larry Coryell's The Eleventh House, Brand X, and Weather Report, will be all over this stuff like glue. Tracks like the jaw dropping "Mind Movie", featuring uncanny guitar solos from Claus Bohling,the atmospheric and gentle "Pajamamafia", complete with Weather Report-type rhythms and Vogel's sax flights, to the bristling jazz-funk-rock of "Paella"-basically, there's not a weak track here. The interplay between Vogel, Bohling, and the keyboard talents of Kenneth Knudsen is truly mindblowing throughout, and the rhythm section of drummer Ole Streenberg and bassist Jess Staehr is extremely tight, filling in plenty of funk grooves along the way. The bonus tracks themselves are pretty amazing themselves, no throwaways here. "Sea Son" is a raging prog-fusion burner along the lines of RTF or Brand X, with ripping guitar and keyboard battles, and the two-part "Alfresco" offers plenty of intricate rhythms and jazzy solo parts, especially from Vogel.
If you are a 70's fusion fan, Sea Son needs to be in your collection immediately if it isn't already. So far, this is THE reissue of the year.
