From Norway comes the debut from The Deviant, the black metal/thrash platter called Ravenous Deathworship. Mixing equal parts early Slayer with traditional sounding black metal ala Immortal and Satyricon, The Deviant conjured up nine cranking and evil tunes of furious guitar riffs, damaging blast beats, and scorching vocals.
From the opening riffs of "Merciless", this album never lets up for an instant. This is not symphonic and atmospheric black metal by any means-no keyboards to be found here, just a relentless assault of raging guitars and blistering drum work. Check out the raging tremelo picked guitar passages of "Serpent" and the hilariously titled "Intimate Skinning", the latter a true headbanging classic of black metal fury. Manic blast beats meet up with crunchy, almost NWOBHM guitars on "Venom of Mankind", while "Resurrection of Hate" recalls Hell Awaits era Slayer, complete with ravenous and slashing guitar riffs and pounding rhythms to go along with the bloodcurdling vocals.
This is a band that should garner a lot of attention for themselves on the extreme metal scene. While many bands from Norway take the long, dark, cold, and atmospheric route these days, it's nice to hear a band that's ready to charge full speed ahead and take no prisoners. Promising stuff indeed.
