While once a hardcore Christian-music outfit with thrash tendencies, Orange County, Calif.'s Stavesacre spent a decade slowly morphing into a modern hard-rock band. How To Live With A Curse finds Stavesacre — named after a poisonous flower — making crisp, thick and melodic down-tuned music with muscle and hooks. This stuff rocks, and even though Stavesacre has been compared to Queens of the Stone Age and Smashing Pumpkins, How To Live With A Curse explodes with musical references to Foo Fighters, Sum 41 and Nickelback. Although not wholly original, that's not necessarily a bad thing. You can hear the quartet's fierce commitment to the songs and dedication to their craft in tunes like "A Reason to Believe," "Future History of the Broken Hearted" and the mid-tempo ballad "Grace." And these days, especially in this genre, that counts for a whole lot.
