Maybe it is just because I have picked the CDs I am reviewing in an unlucky order, but it seems that a large number of Avant Garde CDs have come across my plate lately. In comparison to most, I applaud the sense of restraint shown by Magicicada. Where many sound-based recordings try to throw everything but the kitchen sink at a song, Everyone Is Everyone tends to have a flow and direction that is understandable. The sound is still a collection of noises and instruments blended to try and create a soundscape, but at least there is some musical quality to the process.
"Peach is Pink" is a prime example of the style you will find on Everyone Is Everyone. It starts with distortion and industrial hum, but transforms into a long series of cello notes, with crinkle paper percussion and some instrument called a zurna (which sounds like really pissed off bees). The song slows to a halt just before a haunting cello theme (combined with water and mountain echoes) brings us back to the industrial sound.
I could go on and explain all the songs, but they continue in the above theme. RIO is not my normal cup of tea, but if you like the mellower side of the genre, I believe Magicicada will be right up your alley. Regardless, I appreciate the attempt and the sensibilities of Christopher White.
