Moore, Gary, & Friends: One Night In Dublin-A Tribute to Phil Lynott (DVD)
To commemorate the birthday of Thin Lizzy vocalist/bassist Phil Lynott, who would have been 56 last year, former Lizzy guitarist Gary Moore assembled some former bandmates to pay tribute to the music of Lynott in Dublin, Ireland. Joining Moore for some Thin Lizzy classics are Brian Robertson, Scott Gorham, Eric Bell, and Brian Downey, plus bassist Jonathan Noyce (on loan from Jethro Tull). It's a fun set, although many will probably wish that it was longer, as the boys only cover 8 Thin Lizzy songs in total, which leaves Moore room to do his blues hit "Walking By Myself" and long time favorite "Parisienne Walkways".
Gary handles all the lead vocals, and does a fine job subbing for Phil. After the solid renditions of "Jalbreak" and 'Don't Believe a Word" as a trio, Robertson comes out for the hard rocking "Emerald", although his contributions to this one are a little lackluster and overshadowed by Moore. On "Still In Love With You" however, Robertson lays down some nice melodic lines and unison harmonies with Moore that really impress. Gorham joins Moore for the fun "Black Rose" and Cowboy Song", as well as the hit "The Boys Are Back In Town", before Eric Bell hits the stage for "Whiskey In the Jar". Moore gives the audience plenty of soaring guitar pyrotechnics on "Parisienne Walkways" to close the show, and it's evident that the crowd loved every minute of the evening. Viewers at home however will be left wanting more. As a bonus there's some nice interviews with all involved as they talk about Phil Lynott and what led up to this show. Overall this is a must have for Thin Lizzy, Phil Lynott, and Gary Moore fans despite the DVD's limitations.

Moore, Gary, & Friends: One Night In Dublin-A Tribute to Phil Lynott (DVD) Posted by Mike Blackburn, SoT Staff Writer on 2006-05-23 13:13:46 My Score:
OK let's get the negative stuff out of the way right away. Due to the large number of bands performing on that day and strict curfew requirements, the headlining set was restricted to the very short total running time we get on this DVD. As a result, we get no "Rocker", not enough Lizzy tunes and unfortunately no opportunity to see the classic twin guitar lineup of Gorham/Robertson on stage together. There are many rumors swirling about as to why this did not occur, but let's just be honest about it and state categorically that there is no way Robbo (Brian Robertson) could have held up his end of that particular bargain. In fairness to Robbo, Scott has been playing these tunes with the John Sykes led pseudo Lizzy for many years now and so is at a great advantage.
Gary should not have started with a blues cover, period. This night was about Phil and if Gary chose to do one of his own tunes, it should have been from his magnificent and poignant Celtic rock collection, or another of the tunes that Phil contributed to on Gary's solo work. For this reason, I have no problem with the great extended version of "Parisienne Walkways" on this night although many die-hard Lizzy fans have unfairly castigated Gary for including this tune. They should realize that without Gary this concert would never have been and that he is the only man who could have pulled off the vocal and guitar chops to make this a true celebration of Phil's Irish rock heritage.
Gary's performance on the Lizzy songs is nothing less than staggering. The vocals are not Phil ok? But they are certainly good enough to make these versions very enjoyable indeed. Gary puts in a magnificent effort to capture the vibe and that certain Celtic lilt that all the truly great Lizzy songs possessed be it in the vocals or the riffing. The contribution of Brian Downey, the old master, to that Celtic vibe cannot be understated. Lizzy just does not sound like Lizzy without Brian behind the kit. Great to see him again obviously enjoying both the music and the occasion. Brian, Gary and Scott are absolutely brilliant together on "Black Rose, Cowboy Song and The Boys Are Back In Town". Also wonderful to see the original Lizzy guitarist, Eric Bell, up there on stage. He is looking great and provides a truly heartfelt rendition of the classic "Whiskey In The Jar", the song that first broke Lizzy way back when and ironically led to the success and musical direction that ultimately caused Eric to leave the band. Priceless as well to listen to his reminiscences while sipping on a cup'o'tea!!
The camera work and sound are solid on this concert. Methinks a little studio fix up has been done to bolster Robbo's performance, but otherwise this is live, loud and in your face. My only regret once again is the shortness of the concert itself and the limited bonus features. Phil surely merits more bonus material than the short but interesting pre-concert interviews provided with this package. This DVD is however a must have for even the most casual of Lizzy fans and is pure gold to serious fans of the band over the years.
