Baltimoore: Kaleidoscope

This is Baltimoore's first release after a spate of reissues and comeback releases on Lars Matton's Lion records label. The sound on this release could be described as AOR fused with a hardrock rhythm and the weathered vocals of Björn Lodin (whose voice is sometimes aided by textured studio-enhanced harmonies). The album starts out with the energetic "To the Bone" and the mid-paced hard rocker "Journeyman". "Fix My Sin" is a faster-paced number with some of the album's better soloing. "Wellaway" grinds away accompanied with a slower Blackmore-styled solo. The Rainbow influence is even greater on the faster-paced "Take Me to the Power", and there's also some decent soloing on the upbeat "Crybaby". "Miracle" is an acoustic track that trails out with a bass guitar solo, and Kaleidoscope closes out with the rocker "In the Name of Love". An average album that has two or three tracks too many but a few good moments.

Baltimoore: Kaleidoscope

My Score:

Hot on the heels of Fanatical (August 2005) comes this new effort from Bjorn and the boys. This is their ninth release, but the first on the bands newly formed record label BLP Music. It also marks the first time in the band's history that the lineup has remained constant for two successive albums. Bjorn Lodin vocals, Hempo Hilden drums, Weine Johansson bass and Stefan Bergstrom and Magnus Sedenberg on lead and rhythm guitars respectively continue in the classic rock tradition they have mastered. The prolific Swedes already have two more albums in the works promised for October 2006 and March/April 2007.

Bjorn wrote all 12 tracks on kaleidoscope with help from Magnus on three. To me, the word kaleidoscope conjures up images of varied design with multi colored accents. That is really not the case with this album. What we get is a series of straight ahead rock tunes, primarily of the 'classic' style, crafted around Bjorn's warm unique vocal delivery. There are a lot of vintage ACDC and Point of Entry Priest type riffs on this one ("To The Bone, Fix My Sin, How Sick Is OK"). I even hear a nod to the swirling guitar harmonies of Lizzy over the up tempo Priest like chord progression of "Plug & Play Me". "Miracle" is the only tune here that varies from the model and is a softer more introspective tune and vocal delivery. The prolific Swedish quintet has delivered another high quality kick ass product, I just hope we see a little more variety on the next two planned releases; the boys are capable of anything.
