...or the singer perhaps?
Seriously folks, if you thought that a band like The Dillinger Escape Plan was obnoxious, you ain't heard nothin' yet! The Smackdown are a band from Sweden who play a maniacal blend of metal, hardcore, prog, jazz, and whatever else you can throw into the mix. While their name is obviously taken from the WWE Wrestling show Smackdown, don't expect any affiliation with Vince McMahon's crew here. In fact, what these guys are really trying to accomplish is beyond me, other than making a lot of damn noise that goes nowhere quickly. I'm all for uncontrolled mayhem in metal as long as it has some sort of focus, but The Smackdown just seem intent on being the band who screams the loudest and plays the fastest shit on earth. In the end, it's all noise, and not good noise either. Sure, the band can all play-there's some impressive guitar work here, and obviously the drummer and bass player know what they are doing. But when everyone is just bashing and crashing it becomes senseless cacaphony, and singer Rob Hardy is utterly incomprehensible throughout this CD, so much so that if you have a neighbor that you can't stand and want to give them a headache, play this CD with Hardy's horrible screaming a few times and you'll have them packing their bags for sure.
Sorry guys, I know you have some talent, but this one's a bona- fide dud. The Dillinger Esacpe Plan you are not.
