Joseph is a bass player who has obviously been playing the music circuit for a number of years as he has managed to gather a rather large ensemble of players to accompany him on this historic journey. Featuring a bewildering array of musicians, their contributions include drums, guitar, bass, piano, keys, sax, mandolin and a few assorted extras thrown in. Vocals are sparse but quite adequate while the production is generally very good.
Playing a typical wine bar / cabaret style of jazz, the playing is easy, light and never in your face. Although there are almost 20 songs included on this decade long compilation, none really stand out as being really essential. They are all pretty enjoyable. Sure you have some crisp drumming, some nice and tidy arrangements and some energetic slap and fretless bass from Joseph on a number of tracks but they rarely sneak above the Plimsoll line.
While this is certainly not in the same league as the heavyweights such as Steve Khan, Joe Sample, Steve Gadd, Lee Ritenour, Dave Grusin, Bob James, David Sanborn, Will Lee et al, the influences are certainly visible and kudos to Joseph for having the determination to help maintain the momentum that the stalwarts of the industry have created before him.
At many times, the songs are funky, up-tempo and playful and would be the perfect accompaniment for that big dinner party you were going to arrange for all your non progressive friends. Very smooth!
