Not very much is actually known about Québec violinist Charles Kaczynski except for the fact that he was very much involved in the local music scene back in the 70's, even guesting on Conventum's first album. Not long after this appearance he released his one and only solo effort on his own label called Lumière de la nuit in 1979, which now gets a proper CD release for the first time thanks to the folks at ProgQuébec.
Lumière de la nuit is an ambitious effort to say the least as all the instruments played on the CD are credited to Kaczynski alone. There are no drums and little or no percussion to be found anywhere on the disc as the music is primarily played on various wind instruments (flutes and melodica's) along with acoustic guitar, piano and the main instrument, violin. The majority of the 15 songs tend to run in the 2-3 minute range, all segueing together very nicely to give the impression of one complete piece of work. Many different emotions are conveyed within the various compositions as moods shift from melancholic passages to moments of fiery passion, all delivered by Kaczynski's adept violin work. This CD offers up both passion and fire and is fine musical statement from a long lost voice of another time; representing the best of what was a truly rich and vibrant musical landscape of progressive rock in Québec at the time.
