Darsombra: Ecdysis

No, it's not an irritating skin condition. The solo debut by Meatjack guitarist Brian Danilowski is a daunting, gritty answer to Robert Fripp's undulating, often soothing soundscapes. "Recorded and mixed at various locations," playback mixed as one long suite, the field recordings, cloaked melodies and sluggish progressions also suggest what Steve Roach might have pursued had his focal interests involved feedback-driven guitar rather than synthesizers. A hypnotic foundation drone lulls one into a state of near-hypnosis while shrill notes occasionally jab and peck. A threadbare semblance of convention breaks free in "My House" with reverb-soaked snare and kick drum samples, chords slowly strummed, a sitar-like solo, and a buried yet legit vocal line. "Dies Irae" is indeed an interpretation of the section of Gregorian Chant originally performed during the Catholic Mass of the Dead.

Bottom line: Ecdysis is not for the depressed or suicidal.
