Two jazz legends, one stage, one magic evening. The Eagle Rock Live at Montreux DVD series continues with this stellar duo performance from keyboard virtuoso Chick Corea and master vibraphone player Gary Burton. Those who have followed these two probably know that they have collaborated on numerous occasions since the early 70's in both live and studio settings, and this concert was recorded during their tour for their 1997 album Native Sense, at the famed Montreux Jazz Festival. With Corea sitting at his majestic grand piano, and Burton besides him with his vibraphone, the duo launch into songs from their then new album, plus a couple of Corea classics.
The telepathic synergy that these two players have going between them is quite mind-boggling really. When Corea comps on some jazzy melodies and rhythms, Burton's sticks are flying all over his vibes with melodic yet jaw dropping precision. When the tables are turned, Corea lays down plenty of gorgeous piano flourishes. "Rhumbata" is simply a monster tune, with plenty of impressive solo spots for both players which gives the song a sense of deep improvisation, yet everything stays very focused and contained. The Latin touch that Corea brings to the table is evident on pieces like "Tango 92" and the title track "Native Sense", yet there is no doubt that this is jazz. Watching the two players occasionally glance over at each other like two dueling matadors on the Return to Forever classic "No Mystery" is breathtaking, and not once do you miss guitar or bass on this rendition. Fans of Thelonius Monk will love their take on "Four in One", as the two play off each other marvelously in a traditional bebop setting.
Sure, watching a jazz duo on stage together might not be the most mesmerizing visual experience, but the camera work is exceptional here, capturing the magic that these two giants created that evening. For those that appreciate the true spirit of jazz virtuosity, this is a must see DVD of two masters who have proven for decades their talents in one of the oldest musical art forms. Together and separately, they have worked wonders over the years, and once again do so here.
