Scars: The Nether Hell

Scars's latest album The Nether Hell offers six songs of energetic and demonic driven '80s thrash metal. The band hails from Brazil, and their music is influenced by bands such as Kreator, Slayer, and Anthrax. The riffs are heavy hitting, at times chaotic, but can also be melodic. If you are looking to hear something new and refreshing it won't be here, but if you are a fan of the panoply of '80s brutal thrash metal then this band is worth listening to, because they do it well. Also, if you are tired of some of the diluted metal that is being released today that claims they are thrash, listen to this album, you won't be disappointed. The lead guitarist, Edu Boccomino, produced some solid solos and at times reminded me of Alex Skolnick from Testament. The vocal work of Regis F. is about average for the genre, but leaves something to be desired. The first three songs are well made, and sound different, but the next three songs sound like more of the same. That said, the fourth tune, "Legions (forgotten by the gods)" is my favorite on the album. Lyrically don't expect much, especially when you have a song that begins with "pain, lies, hate, blood, destruction;" however, the lyrics do convey the image that they intended to. Generally the lyrics are about war, destruction, and hell, and based on the inclusion of war-themed historical events on the second track, the band is writing about the hellish nature of the violence existing in today's world. Hail Satan.
