Dubbed industrial popcore, Otto's Daughter take the melodic aspects of genres not typically known for their melodies -- industrial, hardcore and electronica -- and add a touch of gothic and heavy metal. The result is Renew. Mixed by Neil Kernon (Queensryche, Shadow Gallery, Cannibal Corpse), it's a noisy and chaotic album that you've got to be in the mood to hear.
Led by charismatic and exotic European singer Jacqueline van Bierk and California drummer HH Gadget, Otto's Daughter make music that is at once eerie, seductive and just plain nasty. To get an idea of what this bizarre quintet is all about, consider that there's a cover of Depeche Mode's "Stripped" here. Then listen to "Showgirl," which sounds like Garbage meets No Doubt by way of Veruca Salt and Rob Zombie: "I'm a lesbian, I'm a virgin/I'll be anything u want/Naughty/Filthy/Dirty/Violent daddy/I want to fuck you too/I think you're overdue/Why don't you take your cash and shove it up yours/In you I smell decay/Because the things you say."
At 64 minutes, Renew tends to get old. But spin this loud on Halloween night, and you'll have the trick-or-treaters scampering for the neighbors' doorsteps, leaving you alone to listen to this album and fulfill your own sick fantasies. Trick or treat, indeed.
