Martin Popoff once again looks at the career of a metal legend, this time the band Dio. Using his signature style of dissecting the albums by throwing in interview snippets of band members past and present, and adding in his own personal viewpoints on each song, Dio-Light Beyond the Black is an in-depth study of all the albums from Holy Diver up to the current Master of the Moon. Longtime fans of the icon Ronnie James Dio will enjoy the many anecdotes and quotes from "the man" that are included throughout this book, many of which explain the creation of each of the albums, his views on each, as well as the occasional bit of dirt on former bandmates.
Of course, much time is spent on the first two legendary albums Holy Diver and Last in Line (if you are looking for stuff on his stints in Rainbow and Black Sabbath, that is covered briefly, but check out Popoff's book on Rainbow for additional goodies), but Popoff gives equal time to all the rest of the catalog. Regardless of whether the Dio fan stopped after those initial few albums or continued to listen with loyal faith up to the present day, there's something for everyone here. While most of Popoff's books are bare of photographs save for album covers, there's a nice section in the middle of the book containing some vintage black and white shots of the Vivian Campbell era, which is a great plus for the collecter.
