There's no shortage of stoner rock bands coming out of the woodwork these days. However, Ohio's Teeth of the Hydra, besides having one of the coolest names ever, have put together here on Greenland (their first CD for Tee Pee Records) a rip snortin', groove laden, monster of a doom record that combines some serious Black Sabbath inspired riffs, Southern Rock grooves, and hardcore attitude. This is sludge the way it out to be, with massive riffs pulsating through eight kick ass tracks, and especially the two lengthy epics, "The Garden of Rotten Teeth" and "Nine Heads". Teeth of the Hydra, made up of singer/guitarist Matt Miner, bassist Matt Bailey, and drummer Jamie Stillman, don't bowl you over with technical chops-sure, they can play, but this power trio conjure up inhuman waves of bludgeoning riffs and pounding rhythms. The behemoth guitar thunder of other tunes like "Eruptin' " and especially "Purgatorium" will leave lesser bands shaking in their boots. No doubt influenced by such acts as Sabbath, Corrosion of Conformity, Mastodon, Celtic Frost, Melvins, and Pelican, the Columbus trio have created here a powerful statement that is every bit as impressive as the debut from The Sword earlier this year.
If you are fixated on the sounds of Mastodon, then this CD will be a no brainer for you. There's a new player on the heavy rock scene folks!
