Kara : Kara

Fans of Iona, October Project, Clannad, Mostly Autumn and Magenta will now be able to add the name, Kara to the fold of Celtically inspired progressive folk/rock bands that have become increasingly popular recently.

Featuring a slightly less powerful voice, deserving of a band trying to carve a niche in this burgeoning market, Kirsta Johnston has most of the moves down pat. She has a very pleasing voice which suits the bands music perfectly. Although the band is only comprised of 3 people, you'd be easily forgiven for thinking more musicians were on board; such is the fullness of the sound.

Of particular interest is the guitar which is played very adeptly by Colin Mold who adopts a melodic and harmonious approach with plenty of tasteful breaks that enhance each song's appeal. As principal songwriter, Colin's writing style is perfectly accompanied by Kirsta who supports with additional recorders, flutes and keyboards. While the band is not breaking any new ground with their music, they certainly embellish each track with more than sufficient fills and ideas to keep things rolling along at a steady pace.

Considering the plethora of sludge that seems to permeate the airwaves these days, bands like Kara may have a hard time becoming as well accepted as more established outfits like The Corrs or the other bands mentioned earlier. Although a more appropriate front cover would do more to inspire a potential music buyer to delve a little deeper, I would assume monetary constraints may have precluded the luxury of such an inclusion being considered at print time. However, given their commitment and song writing skills, they certainly deserve to be heard and more widely promoted. This is well rounded and very pleasing stuff. Well done!
