Through the Eyes of the Dead: Bloodlust

Wow, talk about some heavy and brutal sounds! The latest from Through the Eyes of the Dead is a non-stop assualt of death metal with some hardcore influences. Bloodlust shows a band that have plenty of talent and seem intent on pummeling the listener with plenty of technical riffs, acrobatic drum work, and no shortage of screaming vocals. Intense breakdowns pop up all over the place here, and the insane vocal attack of Anthony Gunnells, with his selection of growls, barks, and screams, is certainly not for the faint of heart. It's one scorcher after another, from the turbulent "Two Inches From a Main Artery", the manic frenzy of "Bringer of Truth", the raging grind-thrash of "Beneath Dying Skies", to the mammoth death metal sounds of "Truest Shade of Crimson".

Lyrically, this is pretty close to gore-core, and not for the faint of heart. While the technical proficiency of the band is certainly impressive (especially the guitar talents of Justin Longshore & Chris Anderson, plus the insane drum work of Dayton Cantley), many of the songs tend to sound a little too similar to each other. Most of the tunes follow a similar tempo, and Gunnells' vocals get a little tiresome after a while, but overall this is a pretty brutal release from a band that should be of great interest to fans of Cannibal Corpse, Black Dahlia Murder, Six Feet Under, and Morbid Angel.
