Tierra Santa: Mejor Morir en Pie
Spanish headbangers Tierra Santa say "adios" to their Dream Theater-like aspirations on their fifth studio album, Mejor Morir en Pie, and opt for a more mainstream hard-rock/melodic-metal approach (Spanish lyrics included) that's not too far removed from the huge Eighties arena-rock sound. Think Iron Maiden meets the Scorpions with a dash of Bon Jovi. In some cases – the title track (which begins with a stunning a cappella passage), "Un Grito en el Aire," "Una Luz en la Oscuridad" and "Nunca Te Alejes de Mi" – the musical changes serve the band well. But Tierra Santa's progressive tendencies still shine through, especially in the keyboard arrangements on "Hoy Vivo Por Ti" and the racing riffs on "La Tentacion." The newfound combination should win these Spaniards some new fans among listeners who like their metal easily digested, and if you're worried about the foreign-language lyrics, perish the thought. Thanks to monumental hooks, you'll remember these songs longer than those from many of Tierra Santa's headbanging brethren.
By the way, in case you're wondering, the title means "better to die standing."

Tierra Santa: Mejor Morir en Pie Posted by Steve Pettengill, SoT Staff Writer on 2007-02-03 14:10:14 My Score:
According to the promotional sheet accompanying Tierra Santa's latest offering, the band is "easily Spain's most successful heavy metal band". It's not difficult to see why. Mejor Morir En Pie is instantly memorable metal, right from the heroic title track that opens the CD. It's tempting to ponder that the band might enjoy even more success outside of their native country if they sang in English, but I applaud the band for sticking to their native tongue. "Magia", "La Impureza de la Amistad" and "La Tentacion" are richly melodic, recalling latter day Rainbow or perhaps Alcatrazz. They even quote Beethoven's Ninth on "Himno a la Alegria" as did Rainbow on the Difficult to Cure album. There's definitely a bit of a neo-classical feel to the music, but with each song averaging about 4 minutes, things never become indulgent. The leanly employed keyboards also give the album that little extra touch of elegance. Certainly an understanding of Spanish will increase one's appreciation of Mejor Morir En Pie, but for anyone who simply wishes to bang their head to strong metal melodies, Tierra Santa will be a real winner.
