Mirrorthrone: Carriers Of Dust

Mirrorthrone is the creation of Swiss multi-instrumentalist Vladimir and the music on his latest CD Carriers Of Dust can best be described as extreme, symphonic metal. Mirrothrone's debut disc was essentially a collection of early recordings from 2001/2002 which managed to attract the attention of Red Stream Inc who released this material as the first official Mirrorthrone CD called Of Wind And Weeping in 2003. Carriers Of Dust is an ambitious 4 song effort in which Vladimir sings primarily in French, with the sole exception being "A Scream To Express The Hate Of A Human Race". This track begins with the sounds of a church organ before the listener, quickly and without warning is caught in a sonic maelstrom as the rhythms alternate between mid to fast tempo throughout the track. Vladimir's vocals also switch between an evil and harsh sounding delivery to almost choir like chants, which blends in perfectly with the classical elements underlying the whole track. The next song "Mortphose" is the shortest song on the CD at almost 5 minutes, but one which sweeps along at a furious pace until approximately the halfway point when it breaks down for a fleeting moment with a few notes on the piano before quickly regaining momentum. The final 2 tracks on Carriers Of Dust are absolutely epic in scope and are the icing on the cake as far as this disc is concerned. "De l'Échec et de son Essentialité" commences with a moving orchestral score before a flurry of guitar notes and rapid fire drums are introduced into the fray. Vladimir's death vocals and furious guitar assault provide a perfect contrast to the classical passages throughout Carriers Of Dust (check out the piano which dances just below the sonic mayhem, brilliant). This track which clocks in at just over 10 minutes is the perfect setup for the disc's closing number, "Ils Brandiront leurs Idoles", which is an absolute tour-de-force at 22 minutes. Vladimir pulls out all the stops on this mini opera with more riffs than the kitchen sink, various tempo changes and a mid section classical break. The mood constantly shifts on this track; it never wavers and doesn't become tiresome. A true metal / symphonic classic. For Mirrothrone's 2nd release I don't think it could get much better and it will be interesting to see where Vladimir takes his music in the future. Hopefully we won't have to wait another 3 years to find out.
