Current Royal Hunt and Artension vocalist John West has assembled a hot line-up for his latest solo album, titled Earth Maker. The title is based on an old Native American phrase which refers to the "Creator", and the story involves the spirit "Shenandoah" and his quest to meet the Earth Maker. Joining John on this concept album is Savatage/Trans Siberian Orchestra guitarist Chris Caffery, Artension bassist Kevin Chown, drummer Bobby Jarzombek, keyboard player Lonnie Park, and Halford guitarist Metal Mike Chlasciak.
It's obvious by the ominous guitar barrage on the opener "Soul of the Beast" that Earth Maker is meant to be different from any Royal Hunt or Artension CD. In fact, much of the music here is closer in style to Savatage or Halford, mainly due to the presence of Caffery and Chlasciak. Most of the neo-classical prog-metal of West's two bands is thrown aside here and replaced by heavy, symphonic power metal. On rare occasions you might hear some melodic progressive fare, as on "When Worlds Collide", featuring stunning keyboard solos from Andre Anderson and Vitalij Kuprij. Mostly though, West and his cohorts churn out groove-laden metal like "Sleep of the Dead" and "Warrior Spirit." It's great to hear West's Glenn Hughes inspired vocals on more varied material, like the majestic "Mystic Wings", the gorgeously melodic "Soul to Soul", or the chunky bombast of "Love is Pain", where the singer utilizes many different vocal styles. Caffery and Chlasciak contribute sledgehammer rhythm guitar and virtuoso solos throughout, and the remainder of the musicians help make this a rock solid recording all-around.
Those wanting to hear one of progressive metal's best vocalist's in a slightly different setting would be well advised to check Earth Maker out. Filled with thunderous metal, catchy melodies, and an intriguing storyline, Earth Maker comes highly recommended.
