Motorhead: Another Perfect Day (remaster)

Another Perfect Day, the most controversial Motorhead release, yet perhaps also the most minsunderstood album in their discography. It was 1983, and original guitarist Fast Eddie Clarke had left the band after the successfull Iron Fist album. In comes former Thin Lizzy/Wild Horses guitar hero Brian Robertson, seemingly an odd choice for a guitar player in the world's fastest, loudest, and dirtiest band. However, Robertson's fluid, melodic style worked wonders here on Another Perfect Day, an album dripping with heavy numbers and memorable guitar work, but more impressive is the sophisticated and melodic nature of the songs. Looking back on it now, some 23 years later, perhaps this style was a little too refined for Motorhead, but it made for some good listening back then, and it still holds up today.

Standout tracks here include the raging opener "Bacl at the Funny Farm", a great vehicle for Robertson, complete with a furious guitar solo, the biting hard rock of "Marching Off To War", the rollicking speed metal of "Dancing On Your Grave", the grueling, almost doomy piece "One Track Mind", and the raging "Tales of Glory". Robertson's inventive use of intricate riffs and flashy solos added a great element to the Motorhead attack, and coupled with Lemmy's gruff vocals, bombastic bass, and Taylor's pounding drum work made for an interesting variation on the tried and true formula that the band had been using.

As with all the Motorhead remasters, there is a second CD loaded with bonus live tracks, this time a 1983 show recorded at the Apollo in Manchester, showing Brian Robertson really putting in an impressive performance on not only the new pieces but also some Motorhead classics like "Iron Horse", "Shoot You in the Back", 'Bite the Bullet", and "Go To Hell". Check out his smoldering riffs on "Hoochie Coochie Man" for proof positive of the man's heavy rock talents. It's a shame that his tenure in the band was so short lived (quite frankly, he was the best guitar player the band ever had), as he left right after the tour, but Motorhead moved on and the rest is history, and still going strong. The booklet on this remaster is chock full of photos, an essay, and detailed info on the album. Soundwise, the album has never been this clear and powerful, making this a welcome reissue all around.
