JMK: JMK
JMK is the debut album from Canada's multi-instrumentalist Jason Matthew Kirschner. Although Jason has a few guest musicians on a couple of songs, this is pretty much a one-man show of bizarre, quirky avant-garde & prog rock. Influences such as Frank Zappa, The Rascal Reporters, and Miles Davis can be heard here, but for the most part JMK is pretty unique sounding, although how much sense it makes will depend on the listener. The lyrics, which are sung by JMK and Star-ella Brunelle (that's what it says), are off the wall, and at times pretty laughable, but I'm guessing that Mr. Kischner doesn't really take all of this too seriously. Some of the tunes get a little funky with some rare fusion fire (check out the rumbling bass on "Time's Up") , another , like "27th Song", mix hard rock with avant-garde jazz, while a tune like "Those Are Not Tears in Big Johnny's Eyes" is as close to Captain Beefheart as you can get. There's nothing remotely melodic, commercial sounding, or even memorable here, but if your tastes run to the bizzare, you might find something worthwhile amidst all this lunacy.
