Pittsburgh's Built Upon Frustration have put together a smoldering stew of brutal hardcore and metal on their new release The Book of Mourning. After 2003's Resurrected, the band's lethal sound, led by the two-pronged guitar attack of Derek Kovacs and Eric Klinger (who also plays in Pro Pain), took the state of Pennsylvania by storm, as well as the rest of the extreme music scene. There's no shortage of memorable and crushing riffs here, as well as angry vocal growls and pummeling drum blasts, which are the basic ingredients of the successful marriage of hardcore and metal. A perfect representation of the Built Upon Frustration style can be heard on the rampaging "Birthrites", a fierce display of brutality featuring rapid fire blast beats and catchy, yet demonic riffing. If you like to create some mayhem in the mosh pit, look no further than "Drowning in Disgust", and "The End of Days" has some intricate harmony guitar lines to go along with the pounding rhythms and killer riffs.
The Book of Mourning doesn't pretend to try and reinvent the wheel, but if it's solid hardcore with a metal edge you are looking for, Built Upon Frustration will surely help you satisfy that thirst.
