Bolin, Tommy: Whips And Roses II

This one pretty much completes the deal, filling the gap left over from Whips And Roses I by including the one original song ("The Grind") missing on that release from the now famous Teaser recording sessions. Our review of and the accolades accorded Whips And Roses I is still valid and pretty much describes what you are getting here; carefully remastered outtakes, in studio jam sessions and a smattering of live performances. If you are a fan of Tommy's flair and improvisation and loved the first release of course you will also want and need this one to complete your collection.

SPV and Greg Hampton have done a wonderful job discovering, remastering and producing this material. The packaging however leaves a bit to be desired. As was the case with Whips And Roses I, the liner notes are somewhat generic and do not include much information specific to these sessions and the players involved. That is too bad because the musicianship was adventurous and spectacularly ahead of it's time. The crisp drumming once again fuels Tommy's fusion funk filled forays into the future. A cynic might add that perhaps all of the Teaser outtakes should have been provided on the first released disk and the lesser quality (sonically that is) live tracks and doubles of Teaser songs released on the second follow up disk. These packages are obviously marketed with longstanding fans of the enigmatic guitarist in mind. If you are such a fan you will buy this release. If you are curious, buy Whips And Roses I which contains the strongest songs from those sessions first and then decide if you want or need this release.

The quality and modern sounding vibe of these 30 year old recordings once again will leave listeners shaking their heads and wondering what might have been if Tommy had somehow been able to avoid his untimely demise.
