Here's a live double disc that doesn't wear out its welcome. In fact, with a total running time of 88 minutes, you could even argue that Fireside Live isn't long enough. But veteran keyboardist John Ginty (whose resume includes employment by everyone from Jewel to Santana to Bad Religion) doesn't need to fill Fireside Live with 140 minutes of music to satisfy both faithful fans and new listeners. The 11 tracks here, recorded live at a New Jersey club in October 2005 with Ginty's crack four-piece band and vocalist Paul Gerdis, reveal a man who doesn't shy away from letting other players grab the spotlight. Sure, there's plenty of flavorful fusion propelled by Ginty's Hammond B-3 ("Savor," "Point A"), but Fireside Live also crackles with electric blues ("Done Somebody Wrong"), manic percussion ("Calypso"), memorable jamband-style vocals ("Faith In His Name," "Arizona") and searing guitar work ("Departures," "Arrivals"). The audience is mixed in low - to the point where some applause is barely audible - giving the album a live-in-the-studio vibe that's often hard to capture in the studio.
